The Equality Act 2010 says that all health and care services must be accessible for people with disabilities.
This includes people with physical, sensory, or learning disability, people with autism or a long term condition such as dementia.
Reasonable adjustments are small changes that will make a big difference to you. It could be something like:
- A longer appointment
- Information provided in an easy read format
- Offering you a different route into the building
You can request a reasonable adjustment and your practice will make every effort to accommodate your request, in line with the Equality Act. Just write, or speak to, your practice manager.
Your GP practice might ask you whether you need any reasonable adjustments so that they can add a note to your record, called a flag, so that your adjustment can be communicated clearly to all practice staff.
This information is also then shared as and when parts of your notes are shared with other health and care services, like the hospital, so that they can accommodate your adjustment as well.
